I loathe hemming pants. I don’t know if it is because I hate my sewing machine or because I just hatI.e to sew. I think it may be a combination of the two, honestly. I have been sewing my whole life so y would think that I would enjoy it, but I do not. It is something I dread and really do not like to do.
My grandmother was a seamstress in a factory during WWII. She we so good at it that she could literally make anything you wanted without a pattern. She once made me a really cool “flapper dress” for a costume party I was going to. She made all sorts of things, and even without a pattern everything she created fit. It was amazing. She also had a really old sewing machine that weighed about a billion pounds. It was made out of iron, I swear. It was so heavy that it never moved from its spot the entire time I was growing up. I don’t know what happened to it when she passed away and they sold her house. Something tells me that it moved with the house because it was too heavy to move out of the house.
Me, on the other hand, no. I did not get the sewing and love to sew gene. I have actually hemmed pants by hand to avoid having to use my swearing machine. I can sew very easily by hand. It’s probably a good thing that I wasn’t marked to the sewing machine maker family. I would have been a black sheep for sure, then.
What I typically do is take sewing to a place here in town that does great work. It is well worth the money spent to save my sanity and keep my family from being subjected to my sewing hatred tirades. It’s much healthier as well.
So, even though I won’t be able printable my new pants on the trip with me, I will have the peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to hem the darn things either. Oh, to be born with short legs.
